The Department of Preschool Education is one of the 17 Departments of the University of Crete. The Department has a two-fold aim: (a) to provide quality teaching and initial training and preparation for its students and (b) to promote educational research and pedagogic applications.

The Department holds and runs successfully 4 research laboratories: (a) Pedagogical-Educational Research and Applications, (b) Research in Psychology, (c) Research on Drama and Artistic/Aesthetics Education, (d) Music and Psycho-kinetics Education. The Department of Preschool Education also houses and runs successfully the “In-service Preschool Teachers Training Centre”. The Centre specializes in: (a) General Education Preschool Curricula and Praxis, (b) Education for Special Needs young children, with emphasis on early intervention programmes. The University of Crete is regularly involved in various national and international projects and provides the necessary experience to implement this ERASMUS+ project

Biblography
Michail Kalogiannakis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Preschool Education at the University of Crete and an Associate Tutor at School of Humanities at the Hellenic Open University.He graduated from the Physics Department of the University of Crete and continued his post-graduate studies at the University Paris 7-Denis Diderot (D.E.A. in Didactic of Physics), University Paris 5-René Descartes-Sorbonne (D.E.A. in Science Education) and received his Ph.D. degree at the University Paris 5-René Descartes-Sorbonne (PhD in Science Education). He has participated in several funded and non-funded projects. His research interests include science education in early childhood, science teaching and learning, e-learning, the use of ICT in science education and mobile learning.
Maria Ampartzaki
Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education
Biblography
Maria Ampartzaki is an Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education in the Department of Preschool Education at the University of Crete. Her research interests include ICT in education, science education in the early years, inquiry-based and art-based learning, teachers’ professional development, action-research, and the Pedagogy of Multiliteracies, among others. Maria holds a degree in Early Years Education, and she also has a Master of Arts in Music Education. Thus, she has developed a strong interest in arts, and she is researching how technology can facilitate and lead learning to the development of advanced thinking skills. She has published her research in numerous academic publications, and she is widely referenced by educators worldwide. She has run and participated in several funded and non-funded projects regarding ICT in education. She also has the experience of participation in five Erasmus+ projects.
Anastasios Pekis

Bibliography
Anastasios Pekis is a kindergarten teacher in primary education since 2001. He has graduated from the Department of Early Childhood Education from the University of Thessaly. He has completed a master’s degree at the Educational Studies Department of the Open University of Cyprus. Received his PhD from the Department of Preschool Education of the University of Crete. Since 2021 he has been teaching as a temporary staff at the undergraduate course of the Department of Preschool Education of the University of Crete the courses:
  • “The transition from the nursery to the primary school: educational design and teaching practices”,
  • “Seminar on teaching methodology: Programs of study – Designing and assessing the educational process”
  • “Teaching Practice-Level III”.
Since 2020 he is an adjunct faculty at the University of Nicosia, in the distance learning postgraduate course in Special Education, teaching the course “Measurement and assessment in special education”. He has been teaching in various courses at the Institute of Vocational Training (Department of Preschool Education) in Chania / Crete. He has published numerous research articles and studies in journals, books and conference proceedings in English and Greek. His field of specialization is “Teaching methodology at early childhood”. His other current research interests concern “Early Childhood Assessment”, “ICT In Preschool Education”, and various subjects of educational/teaching methodology in preschool and special education
Gerassimos Koutsogiorgos

Bibliography
Gerassimos Koutsogiorgos is currently working as an administrative staff in the Research Committee - Special Account for Research Funds of the University of Crete (ELKE/UoC). He holds a Bachelor's degree in International and European Studies from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. He, also, holds a Master's Degree in Southeast European Studies from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and a Post Graduate Diploma in «European Union and Developing Countries» from Panteion University-Jean Monnet Programme. He has worked in the consulting sector for more than a decade, focusing on projects and studies in the field of local and regional development, urban and rural planning, territorial cooperation, European Cohesion Policies and Structural Funds, for the benefit of various local and regional authorities, development agencies and managing authorities. For a short period, he has been a Teaching Fellow on “European Integration” in the School of Management and Economics, Technological Educational Institute of Crete.
